House of Fun: Kid Blastoff , merchandise, etc

[For both] What are the current plans/schedule for "Kid Blastoff"? I think it's an interesting new direction for you two. -- Rob Jeremias, Bakaboy712@aol.com

Sarah: We have a lot of ideas and stories for KB, and want to do more issues. When we'll have time is another matter. I don't know if Evan has any schedule in mind...

Evan: Our plans for KB are pretty solid, but like Sarah said time is the only thing keeping us from doing further stories. In my spare time I've been sketching and developing a fairly large cast of characters of all sorts, heroes, criminals, devices and creatures, handlers and managers of the good and bad guys etc, and Sarah and I have developed some more story ideas and springboards -- but we haven't the time to write and draw them right now. I've been toying with the idea of getting an inker so we can get the work done more quickly, but there are drawbacks to that as well -- paying the inker, for one. Besides that, I'm pretty into doing my own artwork, flawed as it may be. It's a pretty frustrating situation as we both really want to do more Kid Blastoff material, but the market is pretty dead for small press b&w comics, all-ages comics, and small press b&w all-ages comics in particular and we simply can't afford to do yet another low-selling book on our tight schedule these days -- but I'm hoping  we'll be able to clear time later in the year to do the second adventure, which will be Kid Blastoff vs. Smartypants and his Thinking Cap.

[For both] Hey, I heard that you guys were working for Disney now. Is that true? I've been out of touch. -- Jess Brooks, jbrooks@macalstr.edu

Sarah: Actually, we (sort of) worked for Disney over 2 years ago. The Kid Blastoff story collected in our comic (see below) was published in 3 issues of Disney Adventures. It was a creator-ownership thing , so it wasn't like working for Disney. It was (in our minds anyway) more like doing something for ourselves, and then letting Disney publish it. We don't plan on doing anything further with either Disney or Disney Adventures though.

[For both] Do you guys still own the rights to Kid Blastoff or did Disney have to have the ownership of it in order to print it (and was that remark about Disney wanting to make KB into a theme park true or was that a joke?)? -- Vu Ha, VuHoaiHa@aol.com

Sarah: We own all the rights. In fact, Disney forgot to get the rights to keep up from reprinting it, hahaha, which is how we were able to put it out so quickly. We didn't sell them a thing. And, uh, that was a joke.

Evan: Yeah, KB is ours lock, stock and rocketship. Disney had reprint rights on the first strip, but things worked out so that we kinda beat the Mouse and got the rights back pretty darn quick. Not that they care about our piddling strip, but hey, it worked out well for us. Hopefully  we'll get KB's second adventure out sometime before the millenium, we've got solid ideas on the next two stories, more characters and a few more plotlines,  now we just need the time to write and draw the books.

[For both] I heard that you used to sell Milk and Cheese beer mugs. Is that true or were they bootlegs? They sound like a cool idea if you ask me. Also, any Action Girl merchandise coming out? -- Brian Spence, bspence@erols.com

Sarah:  Yes, we really did sell beer mugs. I think we made 94 sets, and that was 3 or 4 years ago. There's a chance we'll do them again, but not right now. (Too much M&C stuff is out and coming.) As far as Action Girl goes, I'd love to do some stuff, but  I just haven't had time to do anything, nor have I really found much stuff I'd like to do.

Evan: The mugs were a pain in the ass to distribute and mail out ourselves, if we do them again it'll be with Slave Labor. I'd also like to do the designs in color instead of B&W, which was all we could afford then. The mugs were Sarah's idea, and I designed them -- one mug had Milk holding a beer saying "One beer good!" and the other had Cheese with two brews saying "Two beers best!". If you want to, bug Dan at Slave Labor and tell him to re-do the mugs, maybe it'll happen.
