Other work we've done

Welcome to our home office, the place where we work to pay the bills and support all of our "official" House of Fun activities. We don't take jobs just to pay the bills, however. We try to achieve the same level of work in both quality and content in everything we do, whether it's a money-loser or a money-maker. We'd be proud to consider any of these works part of the House of Fun, except that we don't own them....

Cool Stuff

While they are based on our own stuff, the really cool Zippo lighters made by Smoke King are made by them with our approval. There are four in the series now. We've also got a real, metal Milk & Cheese lunchbox, put out by Dark Horse Comics!

Other Comics

Ta-da!! We've written two Supergirl "episodes" for the Superman Adventures comic book -- the oversized origin issue (#21, left) and an immediate sequel, "Reunion" (#39).

Evan 's demented dream project, World's Funnest, is on the schedule for this Fall from DC Comics. Read more about it (and other bits and pieces he's doing here and there) in the newsletter.

Some older stuff you can still probably find:

Evan and I did two strips for Dark Horse Comics' Scatterbrain humor anthology (issues #2 and #4).

Evan did a one-page Milk & Cheese story for Oni Press' Oni Double Feature #2.

Evan did a four-issue story arc of the Mask for Dark Horse Comics called Mask: The Hunt for Green October. The story follows a down on his luck antique dealer /thrift shop proprietor named Ray Tuttle and his young daughter Emily, who is suffering from trauma-induced muteness following an accident that changed their lives. Their lives are changed even further after the the mask falls into their hands three days before  Halloween. (To see cover art and synopses of each issue or order copies, search through DHC's backlist.  -- You can also find some of Evan's other DHP work here, which includes Predator: Big Game, Predator: Bad Blood,  and the Harvey-Award-nominated anthology Instant Piano also featuring Stephen DeStefano, Mark Badger, Robbie Busch and Kyle Baker.)

Television

Our most recent television work has all been behind-the-scenes stuff. Last year we redeveloped and wrote a bible for the television adaptation of Andi Watson's Skeleton Key (another fine Slave Labor comic you should be reading). Further involvement with the show is possible, but it's still very early to say what will happen, or even if anything will.

And more recently we've been spending a lot of time working on an Eltingville pilot for the Cartoon Network. (You can read more about the whole process in Evan's newsletters.) The script is finished and approved, and the storyboard is well-along. Who knows what will happen? But a year from now you might even be seeing the results!

We're still writing (albeit very sporadically) for the Cartoon Network series Space Ghost Coast-to-Coast. For those not in the know, SGCTC is an semi-animated talk show, hosted by 60s Hanna Barbera cartoon character Space Ghost. It really does feature live semi-celebrity guests, who are (sort of) interviewed by him. Space Ghost's director is Moltar (the evil lava man from the 60s Space Ghost cartoons) and his bandleader is Zorak (a giant evil mantis, also from the 60s Space Ghost cartoons). Both villains are stuck on the show as punishment for their crimes, and often try to ruin the show, kill Space Ghost, or both. Needless to say, it can get pretty strange! Show lengths run anywhere from eleven minutes to half an hour and episodes have been written by MST3K's Joel Hodgson, Duplex Planet's David Greenberger, and writers from Late Night With David letterman whose names we forget because we don't care.

We have written FIFTEEN episodes, most of which have already aired and you can catch in repeats: "Gum, Disease" (guests: Branford Marsalis and Danny Bonaduce); "Girlie Show" (Carol Channing, Fran Drescher, Alice Cooper); "Jerk" (Sandra Bernhard, Palmer Mills); "$20.01: A Space Ghost Episode" (Penn & Teller, Joel Hodgson); "Switcheroo" (Susan Olsen, Elvira); "Cookout" (Emeril Lagasse, Martin Yan); the Birdman intro to "Art Show" (Laurie Anderson, Stomp); "Anniversary" (Bobcat Goldthwait, Judy Tenuta); "Pilot" (starring Birdman, with guests Ice and ?? from American Gladiators); "Zorak" (a tribute to, well, Zorak!); "Hipster" (Sam Butera, and the Millionaire from Combustible Edison); "Lawsuit" (featuring guest litigants Jan and Jayce); "Telethon"; and two scripts still in production. At the moment, SGCTC airs Friday night at  11pm EST, and is repeated Sat (12 am EST).

We are also worked as freelancers for Warner Brother's late and lamented animated Superman cartoon. We worked on four episodes which air regularly -- "Livewire" featuring the new female villain (this is her origin episode, but for a sneak preview of the character, see issue #4 of the Superman animated series comic) ; "Monkey Fun", which is about Titano --yes, Titano, the giant monkey from the old comics; and parts 1 & 2 of "Little Girl Lost", featuring the origin of the new animated universe Supergirl. (See our accompanying and nifty comic above). Check for upcoming airings of these, or any STAS episodes at the WB cartoon episode guide.

For the most recent  series, Batman Beyond, we wrote an episode called "Splicers" which is led off the Fall 99 season.

Evan also did some storyboard work a few years ago for several episodes of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles show (!).  He also did a rewrite for an unproduced Hanna Barbera  short in 1995.

CD/7" covers and Illustrations

The list of records and magazines we've done illustrations includes: The Mash it Up series of Boston ska compilations; Jump Up! Records' similar series, focusing on Midwestern ska bands, called the American Skathic series; The Exceptions' (a ska band from Detroit), first 7" and two CDs; a 4-song 7" for Radon,  a tres cool punk-pop band, now and again defunct, out of Gainesville Florida; and most recently, the cover to the Skeptic Tank CD. We hope to have a complete, illustrated list for you soon!

All done? Go back out to the foyer!
